What is the Best Hutch for my Rabbit
Rabbits make the most wonderful pets. They are sociable, nosey, and need lots of love and are more than happy to return that love 10 fold.
Building your bunny their own hutch is essential for bunnies that live outside. It is important to give them space and safety in order for them to be happy, warm and safe. A Rabbit hutch is not just a wooden box for them to shelter in at night it is so much more
In order to keep your bunny happy and healthy, you need a hutch that’s big enough for them to run in and to explore. As a guideline, a sleeping hutch should be four times bigger than your bunny and should be big enough for them to take three hops from one side to the other but remember this is just for them to sleep in.
The following items should be included in your new hutch.
Your bunny will need to feel cosy and comfortable so make sure they have fresh bedding such as Bedding, Hay, Wood shavings & Straw
A Litter tray, preferably plastic, with filling such as newspaper straw or hay. This will help reduce the odour of pee in the hutch and help with general hutch & cage cleaning
Your bunny will need a food bowl for his Food and Treats. They may well eat grass during the day and outside time but their diet will need to be supplemented with the correct Rabbit Food
You will also need to provide your rabbit with a continuous supply of fresh water. We would recommend a water bottle. The most popular type is the one that ties onto the wire mesh of the hutch.
Hutch covers & Cage Stands are essential in the colder seasons these will definitely help insulate the cage from the elements and keep it elevated from the wet ground.
You may want to place some chews, toys & playthings in your bunnies hutch to keep them busy and entertained, helps keep the garden destruction levels down.
Your bunny will also need good space to run around in during the day. It is recommended that you attach a run to the hutch if your bunny is not free to roam in your garden. The size of the run should be a minimum of 3m x 2m x 1m.
The best type of material to use when building your hutches, cages 7 runs is untreated wood. It is solid, safe and a natural product so, non-toxic. Even though it requires more work when cleaning, wooden floors are the way to go. Mesh floors may be easier to clean and help with ventilation but the wire does cause hock injuries to the bunnies feet and adds discomfort to their daily lives.
An indoor rabbit still needs a hutch to feel safe and secure but, if this is not an option then make sure you create an area for beds & hideaways.
